How many Germans are we around here?

If you ask how many Germans are we around here, well according to the 2021 Census, the Gold Coast has a population of 29,449 individuals identifying as having German ancestry, representing 4.7% of the city’s population. 

In Queensland, 20.7% of the German-born population resides in the state, with the largest communities found in New South Wales (28.6%) and Victoria (25.1%). 

Historically, Queensland has been a significant destination for German immigrants. In 1891, the number of German-born people living in Queensland grew to 14,910 persons. By 1891, around 45,000 German-born people had settled in Australia, but this number dropped by 1947 mainly due to the events associated with the World Wars. 

While specific data for neighbouring council areas is limited, the Gold Coast remains a prominent hub for individuals of German ancestry in Queensland.

It’s important to note that the German-born population in Australia has been declining due to factors such as an aging population, return migration, and a lack of new arrivals. The latest Census in 2016 recorded 102,595 Germany-born people in Australia, a decrease of 5.0% from the 2011 Census.

Overall, individuals with German ancestry constitute a significant portion of the Australian population, with 1,026,138 respondents stating that they had German ancestry in the 2021 Census, representing 4% of the total Australian population.
